# Gauteng co-operative and traditional affairs MEC Lebogang Maile has rescinded the suspension of two DA councillors of the Johannesburg and Tshwane metros. Maile says after taking legal advice, it was decided that Johannesburg Speaker Vasco da Gama and Tshwane councillor Katlego Mathebe will immediately be reinstated. The pair was suspended without pay for allegedly breaching their code of conduct. The DA’s lawyers challenged the suspensions.

# Maile’s education counterpart Panyaza Lesufi has vowed that decisive action will be taken against Eurhuleni’s Graceland Education Centre if it fails to provide answers on the death of 15-year-old Laticia Jansen. She was raped, stabbed and set alight after being left behind by her scholar transport in Germiston. After visiting the family today, Lesufi expressed his disappointment at the school’s apparent lack of concern over Laticia’s disappearance…

# The DA in North West is saddened by the attack on Derek Mathews and his family on their farm near Deelpan over the weekend. The vice chairperson of Grain SA and his family were having a braai when they were tied up by five armed men, assaulted and robbed. In Ferndale, Johannesburg, a man and a woman in their 70s were left critically injured early this morning when they were attacked in their home by a man brandishing a knife.

# Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto has claimed to be behind the so-called Luanda Leaks. The 700-thousand files distributed last week implicate Isabel dos Santos, the billionaire daughter of Angola’s former president, in corruption. Pinto is awaiting trial in a Lisbon jail for extortion and other crimes. Since the release of the Luanda Leaks, Angolan prosecutors have formally launched criminal investigations against Dos Santos.

# Rugby…Springbok Sevens physiotherapist Hugh Everson says the players’ recovery is top of the agenda ahead of the Sydney leg of the World Series this weekend. The Blitzboks will face Argentina, Samoa and France in Pool B. Everson says some team members have a few niggles following a disappointing performance in New Zealand…

# Cricket…England won the fourth Test by 191 runs and the series 3-1 on the fourth day of the match at the Wanderers this afternoon. Vernon Philander was given a hero’s send-off following his last innings for South Africa. Big Vern scored 10 runs and received a standing ovation from the crowd, sustained applause from the visiting players and a guard of honour by his team mates. The 34-year-old will ply his trade in England in future.

# Finance news: The dollar is trading at 14-Rands-56-cents and the euro at 16-Rands-4-cents. One British pound costs 19-Rands-3-cents. Gold is selling at one-thousand-581-dollars-35-cent a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 58-dollars-54-cents a barrel.
